Where do I have to make my application? All persons who wish to have a driving a Licence authorising to drive in Mauritius shall make an application to the Commissioner of Police.

Who can apply? The minimum age to apply for Provisional Driving Licence is 15 years for an auto cycle, 17 years for a motorcycle and 18 years for a motorcar.

How to apply? Application can be made either in person at the nearest Police Station of applicant or on-line. If you choose the option of the application in person, you have to go to the nearest Police Station with following original documents: Birth Certificate, National Identity Card, Marriage Certificate, and a Work/ Residence Permit and Passport - Non-Mauritian Citizen. What happens next? The Police will process the application. You will be notified by a registered letter to take an appointment for the Audio Visual Test. 
What are the different tests?

  1. You will first have an Audio Visual Test that you can do either in English or in French. You have to answer 40 questions, checking your capacity to read and understand traffic signs and assess your knowledge of the rules of the road. This exam lasts about 40 minutes, so you have 1 minute to answer each question. The examination lasts for about forty minutes.
  2. If the test is successful, you will have to take an appointment for a practical driving test. The inspector will check if you are able to start off, change of gears, turn corners correctly, stop at various speeds etc.

What if I have an International Driving Licence? You shall entitle the holder to drive within the State of Mauritius any authorized vehicle, provided that such licence is valid for more than 3 years at the time of the registration in Mauritius.

How to apply for an International Driving Permit? You have to call in person at the International Driving Permit Counter, between 9am and 2pm. You have to fill in the prescribed form give the following documents: National Identity Card (original), your valid local driving licence, 2 recent passport size photographs, the prescribed fee of Rs 800. If all required documents listed below are in order, an International Driving Permit should be issued within two working days!

What are the Applicable Fees for all these steps? The Audio Visual Test and Driving Test (Motor Cars only) is  Rs 500. The Driving test (Auto/Motorcycle) is Rs 500. The International Driving permit is Rs 800. If you have lost or damaged your driving licence, duplicating it will cost you Rs 500.
